How to Crochet the Iris Stitch Tee

Materials Needed

  • 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • Light worsted weight baby alpaca yarn (Originally Lovely Korea yarn)

Foundation Single Crochet

To start the project, you need a stretchy foundation single crochet edge.

Steps:

  1. Create a slip knot and place it on your hook.
  2. Chain 2.
  3. Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook (the first chain stitch).
  4. Pick up two strands: the top of the "V" of the chain and the bar behind the chain.
  5. Yarn over and pull through to create a new loop.
  6. Yarn over and chain 1.
  7. Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook.
  8. Repeat steps 3-7 for the rest of the foundation row.

Round 1

Work a row of single crochet back loop only to create a stretchy hem.

Steps:

  1. Chain 1 (doesn't count as a stitch).
  2. Work single crochet in back loop only into each stitch around.
  3. Slip stitch to join the round.

Round 2

Start the Iris Cluster Stitch.

Steps:

  1. Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet plus a chain).
  2. Work 2 double crochets into the same stitch.
  3. Skip 3 stitches, then work 2 double crochets, chain 1, 2 double crochets in the following stitch.
  4. Repeat step 3 to the end of the round.
  5. To finish the round, work 1 double crochet into the first stitch where you started the round, and slip stitch into the chain 1 space.

Round 3 and Onward

Alternate right-side and wrong-side rounds to maintain a straight seam.

Steps:

  1. Chain 3 and turn the work.
  2. Work 2 double crochets into the same chain 1 space.
  3. Skip 4 stitches, then work Iris Cluster (2 double crochets, chain 1, 2 double crochets) in the chain 1 space.
  4. Continue around, finishing with a double crochet in the starting space and slip stitch in chain 1 space.

Form the Back and Front Panels

Separate the work for the back and front panels by working flat for each section.

Back Panel:

  1. Work across the desired number of rows for half the stitches, following the pattern for Iris Clusters.
  2. For shoulder shaping, work fewer stitches over several rows to shape the shoulder.

Front Panel:

  1. Similar to the back panel but starts lower to shape the neckline.
  2. Work flat over half the total stitches, leaving space for the neckline.

Join Shoulders

Slip stitch join the front and back shoulder seams.

Steps:

  1. Align the front shoulder stitches with the back shoulder stitches.
  2. Insert hook into the back loop only of both front and back shoulder stitches and slip stitch to join.

Neckline

Work around the neckline to create a clean edge.

Steps:

  1. Begin at the back neckline edge.
  2. Work single crochets evenly around the neck opening.
  3. Chains may need to be worked into double crochets for an even look.

Sleeves

Attach the yarn to the underarm and work in rounds to create the sleeves.

Steps:

  1. Work rounds of the Iris Cluster Stitch.
  2. Continue rounds to the desired sleeve length.

Conclusion

Wow! That's Great, your Iris Stitch Tee is complete! You now have a beautiful and stylish crochet tee with a lovely texture and drape.
