How To crochet A Minimal Tank Top

Best Yarn for Crochet Tank Tops:

  • Recommended Yarn:
    • Blend: 51% acrylic and 49% cotton (Wollidu yarn used in the video)
    • Amount: 1.5 skeins for size extra small
    • Hook Size: Recommended 3.5 mm, but 3.0 mm was used for a tighter stitch
  • Choosing Yarn:
    • Fiber: Cotton for breathability, acrylic for durability
    • Weight: DK or light worsted for a lightweight top
  • Additional Tips:
    • Measurements: Adjust foundation chain to bust size (e.g., 32-inch bust subtract 2 inches, divide by 2 for each panel)
    • Stitch Pattern: V-stitch used in the tutorial

Materials Needed:

  • Yarn: Wollidu (50g per skein; 51% acrylic, and 49% cotton). For this project, 1.5 skeins are needed for size extra small.
  • Crochet hook: 3.0 mm (one size smaller than the recommended 3.5 mm).
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors

Step by step Pattern

1. Measurements and Foundation Chain:

  • Take your bust measurements and subtract 2 inches.
  • Divide this number by 2 to get the width of one panel.
    • Example: Bust measurement is 32 inches.
    • ( 32 - 2 = 30 )
    • ( 30 / 2 = 15 inches )
  • Create a foundation chain equivalent to this measurement in a multiple of three.
    • Example: Chain length for 15 inches.

2. Creating the V-Stitch Pattern:

  • Row 1:
    • Skip the first 3 chains.
    • In the 4th chain, work 1 double crochet (dc).
    • Chain 1.
    • In the same stitch, work another dc. This forms the first V-stitch.
    • Skip 2 chains.
    • In the 3rd chain, work a V-stitch (1 dc, chain 1, 1 dc in the same stitch).
    • Repeat until the end of the row.
    • Finish with a dc in the last stitch.
  • Row 2:
    • Chain 3 and turn your work.
    • In the chain-1 space of the previous row's V-stitch, work a V-stitch (1 dc, chain 1, 1 dc).
    • Repeat across the row, working V-stitches in each chain-1 space.
    • Finish with a dc on top of the turning chain.
  • Repeat Row 2:
    • Continue repeating Row 2 until you reach the length from the bottom to 2 inches below your underarm.

3. Shaping the Armholes:

  • To shape the armholes, reduce by skipping the first and last V-stitch of the row.
  • Decrease Row:
    • Chain 3 and turn work.
    • Skip the first V-stitch and work a V-stitch in the next V-stitch.
    • Repeat across, skipping the last V-stitch.
    • Finish with a dc on top of the last dc.
    • Continue this decrease on each row until you have reduced by 4 V-stitches on each side.

4. Final Length:

  • Once you reach the desired armhole reduction, continue working with no decreases until you reach your collarbone. Do this for approximately 3 additional rows or until it fits your desired length.

5. Creating the Straps:

  • From the collarbone to the top of the shoulder, measure length (typically about 3 inches). Chain a length double this measurement.
    • Example: For 3 inches, chain 6 inches.
  • Attach the chain from the top front of the shoulder to the back.

6. Joining Panels:

  • Create two identical panels.
  • Join the sides from the bottom to the start of the armhole reduction.
  • Use slip stitches for joining or a sewing needle.

7. Working on Edges:

  • Single Crochet Edge:
    • Start from any side and reattach yarn.
    • Single crochet (sc) in each stitch around the armhole and the neckline for a neat finish.
    • Work around the entire edge, including the chains from step 5.
    • Repeat for both the neckline and armholes.

Final Steps:

  • Once all panels are joined and edges finished, weave in all ends.
  • Try on the tank top to ensure it fits well.
  • Make adjustments if necessary.
