How To Crochet Lace Bucket Hat

Materials Needed

  1. A 3 mm crochet hook.
  2. Cotton yarn in your preferred colors.
  3. Stitch markers (optional but helpful).

  • ch: Chain
  • dc: Double Crochet
  • sc: Single Crochet
  • sl st: Slip Stitch
  • st: Stitch
  • blo: Back Loop Only
  • fpdc: Front Post Double Crochet
  • dtr: Double Treble Crochet
  • MR: Magic Ring
  • rep: Repeat

Hat Body Instructions

Step 1: Base Circle

  1. Magic Ring: Create a magic ring.
  2. Round 1:
    • Ch 2 (does not count as a dc).
    • Work 10 dc into the MR.
    • Pull the tail of the magic ring to close and secure.
    • Sl st into the top of the first dc to close the round.
  3. Round 2:
    • Ch 2 (does not count as a dc).
    • Work 2 dc into each st around. (Total = 20 dc).
    • Sl st into the top of the first dc to close the round.
  4. Round 3:
    • Ch 2 (does not count as a dc).
    • Alternate: 1 dc into the first st, 2 dc into the next st. Repeat around. (Total = 30 dc).
    • Sl st into the top of the first dc to close.
  5. Round 4:
    • Ch 2.
    • Alternate: 1 dc in each of the first 2 sts, 2 dc into the next st. Repeat around. (Total = 40 dc).
    • Sl st to close.
  6. Continue Adding Rounds:
    • Gradually increase by following the pattern:
      • Round 5: 1 dc in each of the first 3 sts, 2 dc in the next st.
      • Round 6: 1 dc in each of the first 4 sts, 2 dc in the next st.
      • Progressively add 1 more dc between increases for each round.
    • Stop at Round 9 for kids or Round 10 for adults or adjust to desired crown size.

Step 2: Transition to Hat Body (Optional Color Change)

  1. Cut your current yarn to change the color or continue with the same yarn.
  2. Attach the new yarn to the back loop of any stitch from the previous round.
  3. Work 1 sc into each blo around. Sl st to close.
  4. You can add additional sc rounds for a thicker base if desired.

Step 3: Creating Suzette Stitches

  1. After the sc round:
    • Begin Suzette Stitch:
      • Work 1 sc and 1 dc in the same st, skip the next st.
  2. Repeat Suzette stitch (1 sc, 1 dc in the same st, skip 1 st) around.
  3. Sl st to join.
  4. For adult hats: Work 4-6 rounds of Suzette pattern. For kids, work 3-4 rounds.
  5. End with a sl st and fasten off if changing colors before starting the lace section.

Step 4: Lace Section

  1. Attach a new yarn color for the lace pattern (optional step).
  2. Round 1 (Starting Lace):
    • Ch 2 (counts as dc).
    • Double Crochet and Chain Section:
      • Dc in the next st, ch 2. Skip 3 Suzette sts.
    • Double Treble Crosses:
      • Work 2 dtr in the 4th Suzette st (first into sc, second into dc).
      • Ch 3.
      • Work 2 dtr back into the skipped sts.
    • Continue alternating Dc-Ch sections and Double Treble Crosses.
    • Finish the round with ch 2 and sl st.
  3. Round 2 (Front Post Double Crochets):
    • Ch 2.
    • Dc in each dc from the previous round.
    • Work Front Post Double Crochets (fpdc) around each dtr from the previous round.
    • Continue alternating Dc sections and fpdc.
    • End with sl st.
  4. Repeat as follows:
    • Alternate between puff and lace designs for 4 rounds (kids) or 6 rounds (adults).

Step 5: Brim

  1. Single Crochet Round:
    • Attach new yarn (if desired).
    • For each st around:
      • Work 1 sc into each dtr and dc.
      • For chain spaces, place 2-3 sc (based on chain length).
    • Sl st to close.
  2. Double Crochet Brim with Increases:
    • Work 2 dc in each blo.
    • Skip 1 st between each pair of 2 dc to create flared edges.
    • Use stitch markers to mark every 11-12 sts for focused increases.
  3. Front & Back Post Double Crochet Alternating Pattern:
    • Alternate between normal dc and fpdc around to add texture.
    • Increase every 11-12 sts by working 1 extra fpdc and dc in the same st.
  4. Repeat rounds until your brim is the desired width.

Step 6: Finishing Touch

  1. For the final round, use a 2-ch loop design:
    • Ch 2, skip 1 st, sl st to the next. Repeat around.
  2. Sl st to finish. Fasten off.
  3. Weave in all loose ends to clean up the project.

Adjustments

  • Crown Size: If the hat is too small, add more increasing rounds after round 10.
