Crochet Off Shoulder Top Pattern

One of the key benefits of this pattern is the opportunity it provides to practice and hone your crochet techniques. Plus, the end result is a trendy and functional garment that you can take pride in making or gifting to loved ones.

Tip:

Use a lightweight cotton yarn for maximum comfort and breathability, making it ideal for warm-weather wear.

How To Crochet Off Shoulder Top

It has a granny square detail in the front, features this boat neck off-the-shoulder neckline, and it has a flowy, fun fit for maximum breathability during the summer. You can make it as cropped or as long as you want.

Materials Needed

  • Worsted cotton yarn (for the top in the video, the yarn used is Karen Blossom Cake yarn from Michael's)
  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors

Instructions

Step 1: Creating the Neckline

  1. Start with a slip knot.
  2. Chain the length needed for the neckline (make sure it’s a multiple of six). The example chain is 120 chains.
  3. Fold your chain in half and measure around your shoulders to ensure it fits.
  4. Insert your hook into the first stitch and join by slip stitching, pulling the yarn through and then through the loop on your hook.

Step 2: Marking the Stitches

  1. Divide your chain by 6. For example, if your chain length is 120, it divided by 6 equals 20. Count 20 stitches and place a stitch marker.
  2. From there, count 20 more stitches and place another stitch marker after the next 20 stitches.
  3. Continue to count and mark for 40 stitches (2 * 20), place another stitch marker.
  4. Repeat for the other sleeve, counting and marking 20 more stitches.

Step 3: Starting the Body

  1. Chain 2 and double crochet into the chain that you slip-stitched to join.
  2. Double crochet until you reach the stitch marker.
  3. Make one double crochet, chain one, and another double crochet into the stitch marker.
  4. Continue double crocheting to each stitch marker following the same increase pattern (double crochet, chain one, double crochet).
  5. Slip stitch into the top of the first double crochet to end the row.
  6. Repeat this for 6 rows, ensuring to slip stitch at the end of each row and chain 2 at the beginning.

Step 4: Forming the Sleeves

  1. Chain 2 to start a new row and double crochet to the first increase.
  2. Make one double crochet into the chain space, then chain the length needed to fit around your arm (try on to measure). Example chain: 8.
  3. Skip the stitches for the sleeve and double crochet into the chain space of the next section.
  4. Continue the row and repeat for the other sleeve.
  5. Join with a slip stitch, ensuring an even count and fit.

Step 5: Adding Rows for Length

  1. If you would like a plain top without the granny square, continue to double crochet.
  2. For the granny square detail, chain one and cut your yarn.
  3. Make a granny square separately (refer to the linked granny square tutorial in the description).

Step 6: Adding the Granny Square

  1. Determine square placement by calculating the number of stitches on the top edge of your granny square and aligning it with the front of your top.
  2. Use stitch markers to highlight where to place your granny square.
  3. Attach the granny square by sewing it between the stitch markers.
  4. Connect the granny square by crocheting through the top details.

Step 7: Decreasing for a Tapered Fit

  1. If you prefer a more fitted top, start decreasing.
  2. For every 6 double crochets, make a decrease stitch (pull through 2 loops together).
  3. Do this for two rows, followed by a row of regular double crochets to taper the top gently.

Step 8: Final Details

  1. Continue to double crochet rows until you achieve the desired length.
  2. Slip stitch to end the last row.
  3. Chain 2 and cut your yarn.

Conclusion

This marks the completion of your Sage top. It's versatile and perfect for summer. I hope you enjoyed making this top !
