How to Crochet Chiikawa & Friends

Materials Needed:

  • Boreply cotton yarn (gray and white for Hachiware, other colors as desired for Chikawa and Usagi)
  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • One pair of 5mm eye beads

Abbreviations:

  • MR: Magic Ring
  • ch: Chain
  • sc: Single Crochet
  • inc: Increase (2 sc in one stitch)
  • dec: Decrease (single crochet decrease)
  • sl st: Slip Stitch

General Notes:

  • All characters share the same head pattern.
  • For Hachiware, a yarn color change is required. For Chikawa and Usagi, use the same yarn throughout the head pattern.

Head Pattern:

  1. Round 1: Using gray yarn, make a MR and work 6 sc into the ring. Sl st in the first stitch to close the ring. Ch 1. (6)
  2. Round 2: Inc in every stitch around. (12)
  3. Round 3: 1 sc, inc repeat 6 times. (18)
  4. Round 4: 2 sc, inc repeat 6 times. (24)
  5. Round 5: For Hachiware: 3 sc, inc, repeat once. 3 sc, switch to white yarn, inc, switch back to gray yarn repeat 3 times. For other characters: 3 sc, inc repeat 6 times. (30)
  6. Round 6: 4 sc, inc repeat 6 times. Use white and gray as mentioned previously for Hachiware. Switch yarn colors as needed. (36)
  7. Round 7: 5 sc, inc repeat 6 times. Continue with appropriate color switches for Hachiware (gray and white). (42)
  8. Round 8: 6 sc, inc repeat 6 times. Continue with appropriate color switches. (48)
  9. Rounds 9-14: Sc in every stitch around. Continue with white yarn. (48)
  • Place the eyes between rounds 9 and 10, with 6 stitches between them.

Decreasing Rounds:

  1. Round 15: 3 sc, dec repeat 6 times. (42)
  2. Round 16: 5 sc, dec repeat 6 times. (36)

Finish the head by closing and fastening off using the leftover yarn.

Body Pattern:

  • Follow the same technique as the head:
  1. Start with a MR.
  2. Work single crochets and increases as indicated.

Hands and Legs Pattern:

  • Follow the written pattern for hands and legs.

Ears Pattern:

  • Follow the written pattern for ears (different patterns for Chikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi).

Tail Pattern:

  • Follow the written pattern for the tail (different for Chikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi).

Assembly:

  1. Sew the body to the head at round 17.
  2. Sew the ears onto rounds 2-4 of the head.
  3. Sew the hands onto round 9 of the body.
  4. Sew the legs onto round 1 of the body.
  5. Sew the tail onto round 5 of the body.

Face Embroidery:

  • Embroider the face to add expressions. You can choose any cute emotion to make your character adorable.
