Materials List:

  • Yellow yarn (a few grams, good for leftover yarns)
  • Green, blue, purple, pink, peach/orange, and white yarn
  • Polyester stuffing
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook (or appropriate size for your yarn)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker (or bobby pin)
  • 12 mm safety eyes

Starting the Crochet Bee

Steps:

  1. Starting the Bee:
    • Use the chain two technique or the magic circle to start.
    • Make a slip knot and chain two.
    • Make eight single crochet stitches into the second chain from the hook.
  2. Round 1:
    • Total of eight single crochet stitches.
  3. Round 2:
    • Increase in each stitch (two single crochets in each stitch) for a total of 16 stitches.
  4. Round 3:
    • Work seven single crochets, followed by an increase (repeat this pattern).
  5. Round 4:
    • Single crochet in each stitch around. Change yarn to green at the last stitch.
  6. Color Changes:
    • Perform seamless color changes with slip stitch into the back loop of the next stitch.
    • Continue this pattern, changing colors to green, blue, purple, pink, peach/orange, and transitioning back to yellow.

Adding the Safety Eyes

Steps:

  1. Place the safety eyes between rounds two and three.
  2. Ensure the color changes are aligned at the top where the wings will be placed.
  3. Secure the safety eyes with washers on the back.

Completing the Bee

Steps:

  1. Decrease Rounds:
    • Work one single crochet and an invisible decrease repeatedly to shape the bee.
  2. Stuffing the Bee:
    • Once the body is complete, firmly stuff it with polyester stuffing.
    • Shape it to be oval, making sure it’s firm.
  3. Closing the Body:
    • Use the yarn needle to stitch the bottom closed by weaving through the front loops of stitches.

Attaching the Wings

Creating the Wings:

  1. Make two wings starting with a magic ring or chain two technique.
  2. Round 1:
    • Seven single crochet stitches in the magic ring.
  3. Increase Round:
    • Increase in each stitch for 14 stitches.
  4. Fasten Off:
    • Slip stitch to end. Leave a long yarn tail for sewing.

Attaching Wings:

  1. Sew wings together, using needle to attach them centered on the bee's back.
  2. Secure by stitching through both wings and the bee.

Adding the Cheeks

Steps:

  1. Use any pink yarn and cut to an appropriate length.
  2. Insert the needle at the bottom of the bee near an eye, create small loops, then repeat on the other side for the other cheek.
