Materials Needed:
- Red Heart Super Saver yarn (or any medium four worsted weight yarn), approximately 780-800 yards. The color used in the tutorial is called "Aran Fleck."
- J 6.0 millimeter crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Pins (for pinning on the pocket)
- Stitch markers
Shawl Pattern:
Start: Chain 178 (For a sample size, start with a chain of 38. Adjustments included for the actual size.)
- Row 1: Work in the back bars of the chain, starting from the fourth chain from the hook. Place one double crochet into each of the remaining chains. You should have 176 stitches at the end because the beginning chain three counts as a stitch.
- Row 2: Chain up three (counts as the first stitch), turn your work. Skip the first stitch because your chain three counts as a stitch and double crochet in each stitch across. You should end up with 176 stitches.
Row 3: Repeat Row 2.
- Row 4 (Crisscross Double Crochet): Chain up three and turn. Skip the first two stitches, double crochet in the third stitch, then double crochet in the skipped stitch going back, thus creating the crisscross effect. Continue this pattern across, finishing with a double crochet in the top of the turning chain from the previous row.
- Row 5: Chain one and turn. This row is a single crochet row. Place one single crochet in each stitch across, maintaining the 176 stitch count.
- Row 6: Repeat Row 4's crisscross stitch.
- Row 7-10: Alternate between one row of single crochet (Row 7 & 9) and one row of the crisscross stitch (Row 8 & 10).
- Rows 11-13: These rows are straight double crochet rows. Chain up three at the beginning of each row and place one double crochet in each stitch across.
Repeat: From Row 4 to Row 13 two more times for a total of three sequences. This should give you a shawl approximately 20 inches wide. For a wider shawl, repeat these rows as needed.
Pocket Pattern:
Start: Chain 38.
- Row 1: Starting from the fourth chain from the hook, double crochet in each back bar of the chain across. You will have 36 stitches since your beginning chain three counts as a stitch.
- Rows 2-12: Chain up three (counts as the first double crochet). Skip the first stitch and double crochet in each stitch across for a total of 12 rows.
- Row 13 (Crisscross Row): Repeat Row 4 from the shawl pattern here on the pocket.
- Row 14: Single crochet row.
- Row 15: Another crisscross stitch row.
- Row 16-17: Finish with two more rows of double crochet.
Assembly:
- Make two pockets. Place them on the shawl about 2-3 stitches in from the bottom edge and three rows in from the side edges. Sew pockets to the shawl on three sides, leaving the top open.
Fringe:
- Cut 176 pieces of yarn about 22 inches long. Attach the fringe to the ends of the shawl by folding four strands in half, pulling the loop through the edge of the shawl and then pulling the tails through the loop. Trim evenly.
